Why use saccharin?

Why do suppliers use saccharin in cooldrinks?

Besides this chemical having a disgusting aftertaste what use is it?
History:

-->
Saccharin was first produced in 1878 by Constantin Fahlberg, a chemist working on coal tar derivatives in Ira Remsen's laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University.

-->
Saccharin has the chemical formula C7H5NO3S and it can be produced in various ways. It is also known as ortho sulfobenzoic acid.
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharin
It is a known carcinogen but South African manufacturers insist on putting this stuff into hundreds of products. It is a by-product of coal refinery and is purchased from Sasol and is cheaper to buy than sugar.
Products which contain saccharin:
Pickles,
cooldrinks,
sweets,
chewing gum,
canned fruits,
jams,
sauces,
medicines, and even
toothpastes
Comment:
It is added to products in addition to sugar so it is not for diabetic use.
It has no nutritive use.
So why??
Please will someone answer this for me.
